The Brahmaputra River System

  • Rises in Chemayungdung glacier of the Kailash range near east of Mansarowar lake. close to the sources of the Indus and the Satluj.
  • Flows eastwards parallel to the Himalayas. Around 1,200 km.
  • Namcha Barwa (7757 m), it takes a ‘U’ turn, deep gorge and enters India in foothills of Siang or Dihang of Sadiya town in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Left bank tributaries - The Burhi Dibang, the Dhansari (South), the Lohit.
  • Right bank tributaries - the Subansiri, Kameng, Manas and Sankosh
  • In Tibet - smaller volume of water and less silt as it is a cold and a dry area.
  • Subansiri
    • Origin in Tibet, is an antecedent river.
    • Enters into Bangladesh near Dhubri.
  • Tista joins it on its right bank, known as Jamuna. merges with the river Padma, fall in Bay of Bengal.
  • In India - river carries a large volume of water and considerable amount of silt.
  • Form world’s largest riverine island – Majuli (352 sq. km)
  • Other names: Tsang Po in Tibet & Jamuna in Bangladesh.
  • Known for Floods, channel shifting and bank erosion.
  • Overflow during the rainy season – Flood in Assam & Bangladesh.
