National Security, Media & Media Trials

“The force of the newspaper is the greatest force in civilization.

Under republican government, newspapers form and express public opinion.
They suggest and control legislation.
They declare wars.
They punish criminals, especially the powerful.
They reward with approving publicity the good deeds of citizens everywhere.
The Newspapers control the nation because they represent the people. “
- William Randolph Hearst.
Media
  • Any communication channel through which any kind of information, news, entertainment, education, data, promotional messages etc. can be disseminated is called media.
  • Mass media refers to communication devices, which can be used to communicate and interact with a large number of audiences in different languages. Be it the pictorial messages of the early ages, or the high-technology media that are available today, mass media has become an inseparable part of our lives.
  • Media can be broadly classified as:
    • Print Media (Newspapers, Magazines, Books and Brochures, Billboards (banner), etc.)
    • Electronic Broadcasting Media (Television, Radio, Cinema, Internet, etc.)
    • New Age Media (Social Media, YouTube Channels, Digital media).
The role of media in a democracy like India, therefore, can be summed up as to:
  • Inform and educate people objectively, impartially and in an unbiased manner about security threats and challenges.
  • Unbiased reporting with the restraints of self-regulations (Like Press Council of India & Self restrain) – Provide Code of Ethics to Press.
  • The Press Council of India is a statutory, adjudicating organisation in India formed in 1966 by its parliament. It is the self-regulatory watchdog of the press, for the press and by the press, that operates under the Press Council Act of 1978.
  • Promotion of the principles of healthy democracy.
  • Respect for the Constitutional Provisions and Rights of the Citizens.
  • To build a bridge between people and governments at the national level.
  • Uphold fairness, justice, national unity and international cooperation.
  • Inform, educate, entertain, publicize and most importantly correct the excesses in any society.
  • Highlight the trouble spots in the society and press the government and public to devise suitable mechanisms to eliminate them.
  • Shape the perceptions of government, influence public opinion, promote democracy, good governance as well as influence people’s behaviour and support people- oriented policies.
National Security & Media
  • Television news in India, with far too many channels competes for viewership 24/7, and with the “Breaking News” sensation, sets the pace for the print media. The distinction between facts, opinions, and speculation has blurred into irrelevance.
  • Misinformation refers to false or out-of-context information that is presented as fact regardless of an intent to deceive. (China spread COVID, but there is no evidence in that).
  • Disinformation is a type of misinformation that is intentionally false and intended to deceive or mislead. (Plan & Trim the full video, show hatred parts only).
  • Both misinformation and disinformation involve the sharing of bad or debunked information, with varying intents and purposes.
  • Fake News - Communal, Caste Hatred. (Full Fake, either Misinformation or Disinformation).
  • Fake Narrative - for a propaganda. (Use facts & Create own story & spread hatred against anyone).
  • Paid News → Advertorial.
  • Politicisation of Media - Separation of Power.
  • Irresponsible reporting.
Media Trials
  • Media trial describes the impact of television and newspaper coverage on a person's reputation by creating a perception of guilt irrespective of the verdict in a court of law.
  • There has been no legal system where the media is given the power to try a case.
  • Every coin has two sides so is the case with media trials and journalism, at certain instances journalist portrays a pre- decided image of an accused thereby tearing his/ her reputation that can eventually affect the trial and the judgment, henceforth trial by media.
